Today, South Africa celebrates Human Rights Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and advocating for fundamental rights such as freedom, equality, dignity, and justice. It’s a powerful reminder of the values that unite us and the principles we must uphold for one another, no matter our race, nationality, or background.
But as we reflect on these universal rights, I’d like to ask a question that runs a bit closer to home. How are you treating yourself as a human being?
Are You Truly Allowing Yourself to Be Free?
When we think of freedom, we often associate it with external circumstances. But have you paused to ask if you’re truly free within yourself? Are you allowing yourself to live without guilt, shame, or the weight of past mistakes?
On this Human Rights Day, imagine what it would mean to extend these same values of freedom, dignity, and justice to yourself. To liberate yourself from the cage of self-judgment and treat your inner being with the same respect and compassion you would for others.
Forgiveness Is a Right You Deserve
One of the most beautiful aspects of human rights is the emphasis on dignity. Yet, many of us feel unworthy of that dignity because we’re holding onto the mistakes we’ve made. We replay our regrets in our minds, punishing ourselves long after others have moved on.
Isn’t it time to forgive yourself?
Forgiveness isn’t about excusing the past; it’s about releasing the power it has over you. It’s a step toward reclaiming the fullness of life that you were always meant to enjoy. You are an incredible BEING, created with purpose. And while mistakes are part of the human experience, they don’t define your worth.
A mantra I will be saying to myself throughout this day is “I forgive you Glenda for not being the way I wanted you to be. I forgive you and I set you free.”
To Be, Have, and Do Without Judgment
What if, starting today, you decided to be the awesome human being you were meant to be? To have the life you deserve and do the things that bring you joy—with no guilt, no shame, and no judgment standing in your way?
Human rights start with self-respect. You have the right to:
BE Free from the chains of guilt. Have Peace in your heart and mind. DO Amazing Things without fear of failure or judgment.
When you embody these values, you enhance your ability to extend them to others. After all, how can we truly fight for the dignity and freedom of others if we are not practicing these principles for ourselves?
Take a moment today to reflect. Ask yourself, "Am I honoring my own human rights?" If the answer feels unclear, know that you have the power to change it. Be kind, compassionate, and forgiving toward yourself.
Let go of what’s been holding you back for years. Whatever it is for you, make today the day you start treating yourself with the dignity and respect you deserve.
You are worthy. You are free. You are enough.
Happy Human Rights Day!
